Description: “Open Up” is a four year-long program co-funded by the Creative Europe Program, giving artists from around the world, the opportunity to develop sustainable art practices through training, knowledge and skill exchange. Invited by Lia Haraki, PASHIAS took part in the “Open Up: Performance Laboratory” focusing on the multifaceted dimensions of live art, with the course “Theory & Practice of Visual Performance Art”. The course traces the evolution of performance art in terms of artworks bearing museological and formal qualities in composition, yet functioning in their disruptive and nonconforming dimensions. Highlighting exemplary works and practices, historical or contemporary from the local and international art scene, performance art is studied as a field of creation crossing over any distinct boundaries of form. The course focuses on the significance of an artist as conceptual instigator and corporeal presence, in order to analyze the vocabulary and set of tools, physical or ideological, at their disposal. Switching from theory to practice, workshop participants are encouraged to determine their own field of interest and language of creation, in order to formulate their individual process of decision-making. Finally, the act of conceiving and executing a performance artwork is established in the following parameters: time, place, body, audience, object, intention and situation.
